1 Game Overview & Interface Layout
Word Search Ultimate is a feature-rich browser word search game built with a self-contained Shadow DOM component, meaning it won't conflict with any other styles on the page. The interface is organized into four visible zones:
Displays your live Seed, Timer, Score, Streak, Hints remaining, Coins, and Level — all updating in real time as you play.
Five tabs: GAME · ACHIEVEMENTS · SHOP · STATISTICS · TOURNAMENT. Click any tab to switch views without losing your active game.
Scrollable list of all hidden words for the current puzzle. Short words appear in blue, long/harder words appear in orange. Found words display a strikethrough in green.
The main play area. Letters are arranged in a square grid. You drag across letters to select a word. The grid size scales with difficulty (6×6 up to 18×18).
2 Setting Up Your First Game — Step by Step
Use the first dropdown ("🌟 EASY — 👻 NIGHTMARE"). Start with NORMAL if you're new; it produces an 8×10 grid with 3 hints and words up to ~10 characters long.
Select a category from the second dropdown. There are eight themed sets (Animals, Food, Space, Geography, Sports, Movies, Science, Random Mix) plus a Custom option. Each theme pulls from a curated word list of 13–15 words.
If you selected 📝 CUSTOM from the theme dropdown, type your words — comma-separated — into the text field (e.g. PYTHON, JAVASCRIPT, HTML, CSS). Words must be at least 2 characters long. They are automatically uppercased.
Hit the blue NEW GAME button. The puzzle generates using a seeded algorithm — the same seed always produces the same puzzle. The timer starts automatically.
3 How to Play — Finding & Selecting Words
On desktop: click the first letter of a word and drag (hold the mouse button) through each subsequent letter, then release. The cells you pass through highlight in yellow. On mobile: tap and drag with your finger — the game handles touch events automatically.
Words can be hidden in 8 directions: horizontal (left↔right), vertical (up↔down), and all four diagonals. The game also accepts reversed words — if your drag spells the word backwards, it still counts.
Yellow highlight = cells you're actively dragging over. Green cell = part of a successfully found word. Red flash + shake = incorrect selection. Strikethrough in Word Bank = word confirmed found.
Tap or click any word chip in the Word Bank to briefly flash its location on the grid (yellow pulse for ~1 second). This is not the same as using a Hint — it costs nothing and shows the word's position for free. Use it when you're overwhelmed.
4 Difficulty Levels — Grid Sizes, Hints & Multipliers
Each difficulty level changes the grid size, number of available hints, and score multiplier. Here's the full breakdown:

6 Power-Ups — How to Use Them & What They Cost

| Power-Up | Cost | Effect | Duration | Best Used When |

7 Coins, Levels & XP — The Economy Explained
You start with 100 coins. Additional coins come from: finding words (1 coin per 10 score points), completing a full puzzle (+100 bonus), levelling up (+50 per level), and unlocking achievements (20–500 coins per achievement). Coins persist between games when you use Save Game.
Every point scored also grants 1 XP. Every 100 XP advances you one level. Levelling up awards 50 coins automatically. Your level is displayed in the Stats Bar and carries over between sessions when saved.
Each consecutive word found within the same game adds +5 points per streak level to your word score. A streak of 10 words means each new word earns +50 extra points on top of its base value. Incorrect selections do not break your streak — only starting a new game resets it.
8 Special Game Modes — Daily, Multiplayer, Speed Run & Blind
Click "📅 DAILY CHALLENGE" to generate a puzzle seeded to today's date. The same puzzle appears for every player on the same calendar day — great for comparing scores with friends. Your daily score still saves to the High Score leaderboard.
A simulated two-player race where both players compete to reach 5 words first. The game auto-simulates a second player's progress in real time. First to 5 wins. This is a local solo simulation — no network connection is required.
Activate Speed Run to apply a ×1.5 score multiplier for 60 seconds. If you haven't completed the puzzle when the 60 seconds expire, the bonus ends and a message notifies you. You can still finish the puzzle — you just won't earn the ×1.5 bonus on remaining words.
Replaces every unfound letter with a ? — you must rely entirely on memory and the Word Bank list. Found words reveal normally. Toggle it on/off at any time mid-game. A true test of spatial memory.
9 Achievements — How to Unlock Every Badge
All eight achievements award bonus coins on first unlock and are viewable in the 🏆 ACHIEVEMENTS tab:
10 Saving, Loading, Exporting & Sharing
Click SAVE GAME to snapshot your entire session to browser localStorage. This includes: grid state, found words, coins, level, XP, achievements, timer, and streak. One save slot exists — saving overwrites any previous save.
Click LOAD GAME to restore your last save. The grid, words, and all stats are restored exactly as saved. The timer does not auto-restart — this prevents timer-based cheating.
Generates a printable PDF of the current grid and word list using jsPDF. Great for creating a physical puzzle to solve offline or share with kids and classroom groups.
Copies a text-based report to your clipboard including: seed, difficulty, time, score, coins, found words, best streak, and the full letter grid. Paste into any chat, email, or notes app.
11 Tournament Mode — Compete for the Top Spot
Open the 👑 TOURNAMENT tab and click JOIN TOURNAMENT. The entry fee is 50 coins. A fresh puzzle generates and a 300-second countdown begins. Your goal is to earn the highest possible score before the 300 seconds expire. Final score is saved to the leaderboard.
12 Common Mistakes, FAQs & Quick Fixes
localStorage.clear() on all game data — coins return to 100, level to 1, and all achievements reset. There is a confirmation dialog but no undo. If you just want a fresh puzzle without losing progress, click NEW GAME instead.
